Welcome and Opening Prayer

Opening Prayer

Holy One, Our Refuge and Shelter, we call out to you, sometimes in praise, sometimes in distress–as life goes. Whether we perceive it or not, you are there. Open us this day to your presence in the smile of a friend, in the call of a bird–in the simple and good enough moments that fill our days. Amen.

Opening Hymn — #FWS 2271 Come! Come! Everybody Worship

Come come everybody worship
With a prayer or song of praise
Come come everybody worship

To keep the Sabbath day
Take a rest and think of God
Put your work away

2. Worship and remember
The Lord’s unending care
Reaching out to love and help
People everywhere

Refrain

3. Worship and remember
Your blessings great and small
Give to God an offering
Show your thanks for all

4. Worship and remember
How Jesus long ago
Taught us how to talk to God
Something we should know

That God is like a light
Showing you the way to go
Ever burning bright

Reflective Moment / Moment of Silence

And know, that despite our sometimes-faltering steps, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are being forgiven, even now.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.  Glory to God!  Amen.

Scripture Reading — Luke 4:1-13  (NRSV)

1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” 4 Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’”

5 Then the devila led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devila said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered him, “It is written,
‘Worship the Lord your God,
and serve only him.’”

9 Then the devila took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,
‘He will command his angels concerning you,
to protect you,’
11 and
‘On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’”
12 Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

Offertory Prayer

Generous God, in light of your extravagant blessings–no matter what the state of the world or our imperfect lives—we offer our gifts and ourselves, and know that you transform what we plant into the produce of love. Amen.

Closing Hymn — #430 O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee

1. O Master let me walk with Thee
In lowly paths of service free
Tell me Thy secret
Help me bear the strain of toil
The fret of care

2. Help me the slow of heart to move
By some clear winning word of love
Teach me the wayward feet to stay
And guide them in the homeward way

3. Teach me Thy patience still with Thee
In closer dearer company
In work that keeps faith sweet and strong
In trust that triumphs over wrong

4. In hope that sends a shining ray
Far down the future’s broad’ning way
In peace that only Thou canst give
With Thee O Master let me live
