Welcome and Opening Prayer

Opening Prayer
King of all the earth, creator of the universe, Holy Triune God, from everlasting to everlasting, you are Lord.  You are merciful and full of loving-kindness and great compassion. We will rejoice, for your grace, O Lord, has overflowed for us.  You have washed us thoroughly from our wickedness and cleansed us from our sin. We will rejoice, for your grace, O Lord, has overflowed for us. Against you alone have we sinned, and to you alone do we look for restoration. We will rejoice, for your grace, O Lord, has overflowed for us. Who is like our God, the One who takes away the iniquity of his people, the One who gives them clean hearts and right spirits?  We will rejoice, for your grace, O Lord, has overflowed for us.  This is our God, the Holy One. Come before him with thanksgiving and offer him the sacrifice of praise. Amen.

Opening Hymn — #154 All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name (v. 1-3)

1. All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown Him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown Him Lord of all.

2. Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,
ye ransomed from the fall,
hail Him who saves you by His grace,
and crown Him Lord of all.
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
and crown Him Lord of all.

3. Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget
the wormwood and the gall,
go spread your trophies at his feet,
and crown Him Lord of all.
Go spread your trophies at His feet,
and crown Him Lord of all

Scripture Reading — Psalm 51 (NRSV)

1 Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin.

3   For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against you, you alone, have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are justified in your sentence
and blameless when you pass judgment.
5 Indeed, I was born guilty,
a sinner when my mother conceived me.

6   You desire truth in the inward being;
therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.

10  Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from your presence,
and do not take your holy spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and sustain in me a willinga spirit.

13  Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
14 Deliver me from bloodshed, O God,
O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance.

15   O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 For you have no delight in sacrifice;
if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased.
17 The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

18  Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,
19 then you will delight in right sacrifices,
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Joys and Concerns, Pastoral Prayer

Pastoral Prayer
Restore to us the joy of your salvation, Lord.  May refugees be restored to safety.  May flooded land be restored to fertile ground.  May broken hearts be restored to wholeness.  May fearful lives be restored to peaceful rest.  May compassion fatigue be restored to hopeful perseverance.
Restore to us the joy of your salvation, Lord.  Grant in us a willing spirit to sustain us.  Amen.

Offering Our Gifts to the Lord

Offertory Prayer

God of the beginning, God of now, and God of what will be:  in your claiming us as your own, you have given us the most gracious and powerful invitation – to pray to lift all that weighs on our hearts, with the confidence that you will hear. As we offer gifts to you this morning, we pray that you will dedicate them so that they might bring love, compassion, joy, and mercy to people who are in need. Then remind us that we are not done until we have offered to you the prayers of our hearts.  In the name of Jesus, our rock and our redeemer. Amen.

Go now with the grace of God upon you, to witness and show the power of God’s unconditional and all powerful love. Go to offer grace to yourself first and then to those around you, those who are also beloved children of God. Go with grace and peace. Amen.
