Opening Prayer

Holy One, Our Balm, Our Feast, we lift our hands and call your name, in need of healing–thirsting and hungry. Your steadfast love is better than life. Open us this day to your nourishment in the songs of the land, in the beauty of the sky–in the simple and good enough moments that fill our days. Amen.

Opening Hymn — #121 There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy

1. There’s a wideness in God’s mercy
like the wideness of the sea;
there’s a kindness in God’s justice,
which is more than liberty.

2. There is welcome for the sinner,
and more graces for the good!

Scripture Reading — Luke 13:1-9 (NRSV)

1 At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4 Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.”

6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7 So he said to the gardener, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ 8 He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

Prayers of the People, Pastoral Prayer

O Jesus, we are grateful for your mercy and compassion. You healed all those, that approached you in faith. In your suffering and death, you redeemed our infirmities and those of the human race. We join our suffering to yours, and ask for your healing mercy. Give us the strength and courage to overcome all adversities. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and glory forever. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Generous God, in light of your extravagant blessings–no matter what the state of the world or our imperfect lives–we offer our gifts and ourselves, and know that you transform what we plant into the produce of love. Amen.
