Dear Family and Friends of First UMC of Torrance,
As we enter the month of November – a season rich with gratitude, reflection, and commitment – I invite us to pause and ask the question that shapes our spiritual vision: “What do you see; how do you understand?”
This question invites us to look deeper – to see God’s presence in our community, to recognize the quiet acts of faith that sustain our ministries, and to understand how God continues to call us forward as a church. When we truly see with eyes of faith, we understand that stewardship is not only about giving – it’s about responding to God’s vision for our shared life.
Throughout this month, we will journey together in our annual pledge drive, which runs from the first Sunday through the third Sunday of November. Our theme, “What Do You See; How Do You Understand?” will help us reflect on how our giving becomes a response to what we see God doing among us. On the third Sunday, we will celebrate Commitment Sunday – a joyful moment to bring forward our pledges as an act of trust, gratitude, and hope. Every pledge, large or small, is a witness to our shared vision and faithfulness in God’s provision.
I also want to share an important update about our church newsletter, El Portal. Beginning in January 2026, El Portal will go digital! We’re excited for this new step – it will allow us to share stories, photos, and updates more easily and sustainably. However, for those who still wish to receive a paper copy by mail, please let our Administrative Assistant, Irina, know. She will ensure you continue to receive El Portal in print. While we will no longer send out bulk mailings, we remain committed to keeping every member of our church family connected and informed.
As we give thanks, make our commitments, and look toward the future, may we open our eyes to see what God is revealing among us – and may we understand more deeply how we are called to respond with faith, generosity, and joy.
With gratitude and love,
Pastor Jacob
