My Faith Looks Up to Thee
Franklin Ritter
Welcome and Opening Prayer
Opening Prayer
Strength is commanding the wind and sea to obey,
Strength is wielding a slingshot in the face of a raging giant.
Strength is accepting vulnerability from inside the boat,
Strength is standing in solidarity with the powerless.
Strength is turning a cheek,
Strength is loving an enemy.
We come to worship
a God who redefines our vision of strength.
Opening Hymn — #178 Hope Of The World (vs. 1-3)
1. Hope of the world
O Christ of great compassion
Speak to our fearful hearts
By conflict rent
Save us your people
From consuming passion
Who by our own false hopes
And aims are spent
2. Hope of the world
God’s gift from highest heaven
Bringing to hungry
Souls the bread of life
Still let your Spirit
Unto us be given
To heal earth’s wounds
And end her bitter strife
3. Hope of the world
Afoot on dusty highways
Showing to wandering
Souls the path of light
Walk now beside us
Lest the tempting byways
Lure us away from you
To endless night

Scripture Reading – Mark 4:35-41; Hebrews 6:19 (NRSV)
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
19 We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain,

Joys and Concerns — Pastoral Prayer
Pastoral Prayer
Keeper of our lives,
you know the hardness and gentleness of human hearts.
You call your people to faithful living.
Through the storms of life
that bring suffering and fear, joy and laughter,
teach us to turn to you for all we need,
so that we may come to know your presence
even in the midst of the trials that surround us. Amen.
Offering Our Gifts to the Lord
For those who are called and able, gifts and tithes can still be made through online giving, by mailing them in, and by dropping them off to the office through the secure mail slot to the left of the double door entry to the church hallway.

Offertory Prayer
Mighty God, deserving of all honor and praise: we bring our gifts this morning, remembering that the offering you truly seek is the offering of our whole lives. Help us, we pray, to live a life that is worthy in your sight. When we struggle and stumble, help us up and put us on the path. On the advice of the apostle Paul, may our lives be focused on “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable” (4:8), so that our offering may be pleasing in your eyes. In Christ, we pray. Amen.

Anchors in a Storm
Closing Hymn — #368 My Hope Is Built
1. My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name
Refrain
On Christ the solid Rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
2. When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In ev’ry high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
Refrain
3. His oath His covenant His blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay
Refrain
4. When He shall come with trumpet sound
O may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne

Benediction
Friends,
Jesus calls us to step out on to the water with him,
to leave the safety of our boats,
and to walk toward Him in faith,
joining Him in the work He is already doing in our world.
And when the wind and waves get high and threaten to overwhelm us,
we remember His words:
“Don’t be afraid. Take courage. I am here.”
So let’s go with faith,
to follow where Jesus leads,
confident that His love and presence go with us. Amen.
