Dear Beloved Church Family and Friends of First UMC of Torrance,
As we journey through October, I invite you to reflect on an important day in our church’s life: Laity Sunday, which we will celebrate on October 20. This is a special time to recognize and lift up the vital role of laypeople in carrying out God’s mission. Laity Sunday isn’t just about appreciating those already serving—it’s a call for each of us to step into our God-given roles within the church.
Our faith teaches us that every believer has been equipped with unique gifts and talents for ministry. Romans 12 reminds us, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” Paul also reminds us in 1 Corinthians 12 that we are all parts of one body, and each part has a vital role to play. Whether it’s through teaching, serving, singing, or offering a listening ear, every role matters deeply. The strength and future of our church depend on the active participation of each member.
We are blessed with vibrant ministries here at Torrance First UMC and they thrive because of the dedication of many laypeople who offer their time, talents, and hearts. Whether it’s leading in worship, working with our children, reaching out to our community, or supporting our Bible studies and fellowship groups, there is something for everyone.
On Laity Sunday, I encourage you to ask God where God is leading you. Maybe it’s stepping into a role you’ve never considered before, or perhaps it’s taking a deeper commitment in a ministry where you already serve. Are you feeling the nudge to help with youth and children’s ministry? Perhaps you have a heart for missions or a talent for hospitality. Whatever it is, know that your involvement strengthens the body of Christ.
Let’s celebrate Laity Sunday by renewing our commitment to serve, not just on one Sunday, but throughout the year, knowing that together we can accomplish more for God’s kingdom.
With gratitude and hope,
Pastor Jacob
