Dear Family and Friends of First UMC of Torrance,
October invites us to reflect on the many ways God is at work through each of us. As we continue our series “Alive in Christ: Becoming a Real Church,” we will celebrate the ministry of the laity on Laity Sunday, October 19th—each of you who share Christ’s love in your homes, workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods. Your faithful witness reminds us that the Church is not just a building or a Sunday gathering but the living body of Christ in the world. I hope you will join us in worship as we give thanks for the gifts God has planted in every member of this congregation.
This month also brings bittersweet news. Pastor Joy and her husband, RJo, are preparing to welcome their first child in December – a joyful blessing for their family! At the same time, they will be moving to the East Coast as RJo has accepted a job relocation. Pastor Joy’s transitional leave will begin November 1, giving her time to prepare for these exciting changes. We are deeply grateful for her ministry among us: her compassion, energy, and loving care for our youth, children, and their families. Please keep Pastor Joy, RJo, and their baby in your prayers as they step into this new chapter.
Our church is also in an important season of discernment as we search for a new Director of Youth and Children Ministries. This role is vital to nurturing the faith of our youngest disciples. I ask for your continued prayers for our SPRC, that the Holy Spirit will guide us to the person God is calling to this ministry.
Finally, I invite you to continue lifting up in prayer those in our congregation who are facing serious health concerns, long recoveries, or other difficult situations. Some among us are walking through illness or grief, and our love and prayers can be a source of Christ’s comfort and hope.
As we walk together through these transitions and celebrations, may we remember that God is faithful. Let us continue to care for one another, rejoice with those who rejoice, and stand with those who suffer, always trusting in the One who holds us all.
With gratitude and hope,
Pastor Jacob
