Hope for Haiti: A Benefit Concert

February 16th, 2010 · Pastor Bob

Dear Friends,

A couple of weeks ago Althea A., one of our talented youth, came up to me asking if we could hold a benefit concert fund raiser for the relief efforts in Haiti. I told her that I thought it is a wonderful idea.

After considerable conversation, we decided to set the event for Sunday evening, March 7, in our social hall from 6 to 8 pm. Althea has created some flyer/posters calling it “Hope for Haiti: A Benefit Concert.”

Various youth leaders and some of our youth have been asked to help, but the main performers are from her school. Althea attends Narbonne High School and is a part of a network of local high school musicals. The musical performers are from different high schools in this area from Carson to Narbonne to Torrance to Palos Verdes. Althea has appeared in several school musicals and has sung at our church on various occasions.

I’m so overjoyed that our church is responding to the crisis in several ways. Initially, individuals were invited to give money to UMCOR through the Sunday morning offerings and several of you have responded. Then the Saturday Supper Social group (formerly known as the Couple’s Fellowship) recently put together over 220 health kits. And now we are opening up our facility to a group of students to enable them to express themselves and contribute.

Donations at the door will be $5 and all proceeds will go through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

Let us continue to inspire and support one another to good works. With the need so great, let us continue to try to come up with other creative ways of reaching out and offering assistance to our sisters and brothers around the world.
